The composer for the new Sandra Bullock and Channing Tatum adventure film The Lost City, Pinar Toprak has revealed her process in approaching the film's musical score. The movie is directed by Aaron and Adam Nee and also stars Daniel Radcliffe, Da'Vine Joy Randolph, and Brad Pitt. It was released in theaters this weekend.
The film revolves around romance-adventure novelist Loretta Sage, played by Bullock, who is going through a bit of depression. Tatum plays Alan Caprison, the popular heartthrob cover model featured on Sage's novels. While promoting her latest book, Sage is kidnapped by eccentric businessman Abigail Fairfax, played by Radcliffe, who believes that the hidden city in Sage's new book actually exists and that she knows where it is. Tatum's Caprison decides to rescue Sage, even though he has no experience when it comes to real-life adventures.

Toprak discussed her process of writing the movie's score in an interview with Variety. She explained that she wanted to pay homage to classic adventure films such as Raiders of the Lost Ark and Romancing the Stone, something the directors insisted on. She wrote several themes, including motifs for both Bullock and Tatum's characters, and one for the movie's McGuffin, the lost Crown of Fire. She then stated that she was able to very easily balance the tones of action, romance, and humor. Read her quote below:
“It felt very natural. Once I saw the actual assembly, the comedy and the action parts were pretty straightforward. We have that emotional depth and the humor as well. I’ve done these genres individually but never a film that had them all.”
