Warning! SPOILERS for The Last Days of Ptolemy Grey.
The Last Days of Ptolemy Grey begins with the tragic death of Ptolemy's nephew Reggie, prompting Ptolemy to investigate not just who shot Reggie but also why he was killed. The new Apple TV+ miniseries The Last Days of Ptolemy Grey is a crime and mystery drama that was originally a novel published in 2010. It was written by noted detective mystery novelist Walter Mosley, who also wrote the screenplay for the Apple TV+ adaptation of his novel. This means that the events in the novel can provide clues on what the future holds for the cast of The Last Days of Ptolemy Grey, including what Ptolemy will discover about Reggie's death.
In the Apple TV+ series, Reggie tells Ptolemy that he's worried about losing his family, and that he has a problem that involves a woman named Nina and her ex-boyfriend. The rest of Reggie's story is inaudible because of Ptolemy's dementia. Meanwhile, in the latter parts of the book The Last Days of Ptolemy Grey, it's revealed that Nina's ex-boyfriend Alfred arranged to have Reggie killed. Reggie was planning to leave everything behind and take Nina with him, and Alfred, still being in love with Nina, couldn't let this happen.

Apple TV+'s The Last Days of Ptolemy Grey could have a similar explanation for why Reggie was killed, especially since there's no narrative reason for the series to cut this part of the original story. Screen adaptations of books often cut crucial scenes because of the inherent time, budget, or narrative constraints involved in realizing a literary work as a series or movie. However, none of these constraints apply to the reason why Reggie was shot in the book.
