Hideo Kojima finally gets to make his horror game. On Thursday night at The Game Awards, Kojima took the stage to reveal OD, a brand-new horror game that will star Sophia Lillis, Hunter Schafer, and Udo Kier. (While Margaret Qualley, the actor whom Kojima worked with for Death Stranding, was previously rumored to be in the game, she did not appear in the trailer.) OD, which was dubbed Overdose in rumors earlier this summer, is supposedly a third-person survival horror game — but Kojima was tight-lipped on what his cryptic teaser was actually teasing.
“I really like challenging new things, groundbreaking things, that’s my kind of rule,” Kojima said on The Game Awards stage via a translator. “But this one, with the help of Xbox Game Studios and their cloud gaming technology, I am kinda doing this… it’s really to make immersive… something no one has done before. It is a game, don’t get me wrong, but it’s a movie. A new form of media.”
One thing Kojima was willing to reveal beyond the cast of OD was that this will be a collaboration with a filmmaker he deeply admires: Jordan Peele. The Nope director took the stage alongside Kojima to confirm he was collaborating with the gamemaker on OD, and that he was completely in awe of what they were cooking up. “I just want to stress,” he said, “What this man is building here is unlike any other game.”
OD does not have a release date, but expect plenty more reveals — including additional collaborators. According to Kojima, Peele isn’t the only big name creative involved with the project. There are more “legends” working with Kojima on the immersive hybrid, a team he has dubbed “The Avengers.”
