Broadway star and actor Jonathan Groff (Disney's Frozen, Netflix's Mindhunter) has been cast in the upcoming season of Doctor Who. Doctor Who returns this November with three special episodes as David Tennant returns, this time as the Fourteenth Doctor. The episodes coincide with the show's 60th anniversary. Ncuti Gatwa's first episode as the Fifteenth Doctor will air during that time.
While Groff's role has not been revealed, the actor expressed happiness upon joining the cast and is enthusiastic about Gatwa's turn as the famous sci-fi character.
«I am so thrilled to jump into the extraordinary mind of Russell T. Davies and watch the incredible Ncuti Gatwa soar in this iconic role,» Groff said in a statement. Groff is the latest star to be announced joining the cast with drag star Jinkx Monsoon was announced earlier last month and will play the Doctor's «most powerful enemy yet.»
«This is an incredible coup, and a great honor, to get such a huge star striding on to our set,» showrunner Davies added in the statement. «So strap on your space boots, this is going to be a blast!»
Gatwa was cast as the new Doctor last May, coming off his performance in the Netflix series Sex Education. He will be the fourth Scottish actor to take on the role following Sylvester McCoy, David Tennant, and Peter Capaldi.
Doctor Who will premiere exclusively on the BBC for the UK and Ireland. However Disney+ will be the exclusive home for new seasons of Doctor Who outside of the UK and Ireland.
