Actor Jim Carrey says that he wanted his Robotnik to have the round suit in Sonic The Hedgehog 2. Carrey returns to the role of Dr. Ivo Robotnik for the sequel to the 2020 hit, which was the first live-action adaptation of the famed Sega video game character. Ben Schwartz again voices the titular character, with James Marsden and Tika Sumpter returning to their respective roles. Joining the sequel is Idris Elba as fan-favorite character Knuckles and Colleen O'Shaughnessey as Tails.
Dr. Robotnik, aka Dr. Eggman, is the main antagonist for Sonic The Hedgehog in the video game series, a mad scientist hellbent on ruling the world. Created by video game designer Naoto Ohshima, the character was initially submitted as a potential mascot for Sega but eventually became Sonic's arch-nemesis instead. The character has appeared in nearly every Sonic The Hedgehog game, frequently appearing bald with a rotund frame, sporting a large mustache, goggles, or glasses, and often wearing a red-and-black jacket with yellow accents.

While talking exclusively to Screen Rant, Carrey said that it was vital for him to «connect with that Robotnik that people were used to seeing in their video game» and that he even pushed for the character to have the «round suit.» Higher-ups shot the idea down, and it never reached a concept stage, but Carrey said that «it could happen» and that he thought the look was «really cool.» Carrey went on to talk about the internal changes the character takes on as well, especially when he gets hold of the «emerald power,» which is an ode to the Master Chaos Emerald of the game, a mystical relic that grants great power to the one who possesses it, with Robotnik
