Sonic the Hedgehog 2 opened in some international markets this past weekend ahead of its US premiere, and the sequel is off to a fast start. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 made $25.5 million this past weekend from 31 international markets. Results so far are up about 2% over the original 2020 film, according to Deadline.
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 was the No. 1 movie this weekend in the UK, France, Australia, Spain, Germany, Sweden, Czech Republic, Austria, Norway, Belgium, New Zealand, Slovakia, and South Africa.
In the US, Sonic 2 premiered Wednesday night fan screenings and a preview session on Thursday that together brought in $6.2 million. The film is expected to make $50 million for its Friday-Sunday weekend in the US.
In terms of its international rollout, Sonic has yet to open in major markets such as Japan, Mexico, Brazil, and Italy.
