Sonic the Hedgehog 2 star Colleen O'Shaughnessey feels very fortunate to be the only video game voice actor to have been cast in the film. The sequel, which came to theaters on April 8, 2022, raked in an opening Thursday that was double the original film's. The burgeoning film franchise is based on the Sega video game franchise of the same name, which follows the titular blue hedgehog as he uses his superspeed to overcome various challenges. In the decades since the original game debuted in 1991, the various side characters in the Sonic universe have become just as recognizable as Sonic the Hedgehog himself.
Although the live-action film stars plenty of recognizable actors, including X-Men and Enchanted's James Marsden as Tom and Ace Ventura's Jim Carrey as Dr. Robotnik, the voices behind the CGI characters are also well-known figures in the industry. Sonic the Hedgehog himself is voiced by Ben Schwartz, who is best known for playing TV comedy roles on shows like Parks and Recreation and Apple TV+'s The Afterparty, and his new nemesis Knuckles the Echidna is played by Idris Elba, who has appeared in A-list projects as varied as The Wire and Avengers: Infinity War. However, Sonic's other new companion, the iconic game character Tails, is played by less of a household name: Colleen O'Shaughnessey, the voice actress who has played the character in the games and various cartoons since 2014.
