James Gunn Wraps Superman: Legacy Script And Begins Casting Search
James Gunn has finished writing the script for Superman: Legacy, and is now assembling a casting list and audition material. Variety was first to report.
As Gunn's time is winding down in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the writer-director recently told Rolling Stone that working on the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 was instructive on how to approach Superman--even if the projects don't have much in common. «I learned so much from making these movies,» Gunn said about his Marvel franchise. «But it's not like Superman is going to have exactly the same vibe as a Guardians movie. It's actually quite different.»
The new DC Universe, which includes the upcoming Superman: Legacy, is set to begin soon, and it will also include movies featuring Supergirl and Batman and Robin. Gunn has expressed his desire for Marvel to continue making good movies--something he now thinks is a challenge. «I think it's really hard in the wake of the Blip,» Gunn said about the universe-wide event that happened in Avengers: Infinity War where half of the universe's population was snapped out of existence by Thanos.
Gunn has also commented on superhero fatigue, saying that it has to do with the kind of stories that get told and the loss of focus on character. He believes that having a story at the base of a film is essential, regardless of whether it is a superhero movie or not. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is set to open in theaters on May 5, while Superman: Legacy will be released on July 11, 2025.
In late March, Gunn shot down Superman casting rumors and confirmed there are no actors in mind yet.
