Like the original and set up both Tifa and Aerith as potential romantic partners for Cloud throughout the group's journey, and the affection levels determine which scene is played at certain points in the game. This is the same for the Gold Saucer date scene, where Cloud's decisions, the side quests he's done, and the dialogue choices he makes culminate into who he can date when the time comes. And when it comes to the two most popular options, there are multiple reasons why Tifa or Aerith might be the better option to romance.
One of the biggest differences in their scenes is that Tifa has an easier time breaking through Cloud's cold exterior, which gets her more romantic options without the need for too much affinity. With Aerith, Cloud tries to maintain distance with her, but there's a more intimate ending that can be unlocked with a high level of affinity. In the context of the history of each couple and their circumstances, both Tifa and Aerith are fitting date options in a canon sense.
Tifa and Cloud have a lot of history since they grew up in the same town and went through the Nibelheim incident together. They even bond during their date over their inability to completely remember what happened the day that Sephiroth went on a rampage. It makes perfect sense for them to become a couple in, especially watching them interact in the new trilogy. From the beginning of, it's clear that Tifa likes Cloud. Their relationship develops organically, and given what Fate has in store for the team, Tifa could be the better option for Cloud.
