Instagram has sunset two of its standalone video editing apps, Boomerang and Hyperlapse, quietly, as the company aims to consolidate its offerings into the main app. It's part of a continued effort by the company to keep up with other social media and communication apps by adding features to the main Instagram app. With Instagram Stories, Reels and even voice call functionality available, the app competes with Snapchat and TikTok.
The shift began to have a tangible impact on users when Instagram announced it would end support for the IGTV app, which was an attempt to provide another platform for long-form media. The app was launched in 2018, and to distinguish itself from other competing platforms, the videos continued Instagram's vertical orientation style of videos. Of course, shortly after the launch of the IGTV app, TikTok boomed. Both Instagram and its users put their effort into creating Reels, the short-form addition to Instagram's platform. With the discontinuation of the IGTV app, it was expected that Instagram might consolidate its apps.

Both the Boomerang and Hyperlapse video-editing apps from Instagram were removed from the app stores on March 1, 2022, as first discovered by TechCrunch. The move came just a week after the company announced the IGTV app would be discontinued and came with no official announcement from Instagram. The Boomerang app was launched in 2015 and can make a looping video from a series of photo bursts. It was available on both the App Store and the Google Play store during its tenure.
