The P70 series will be Huawei’s first flagship lineup for the year, comprising of the regular model, followed by the P70 Pro and, likely, the top-tier model, the P70 Art. To make the launch slightly different from the Mate 60 from 2023 that featured the Kirin 9000S, a new rumor claims that Huawei is developing a new chipset for the upcoming family of flagship smartphones called the Kirin 9010.
The Kirin 9000S is not expected to be re-used with the upcoming P70 series because, according to a tipster going by the handle ‘Smart Pikachu’ on Weibo, a new Kirin 9010 is said to be tested with the flagship lineup. Unfortunately, as you would have guessed, key details surrounding the Kirin 9010 have not been shared, but we can still make some assumptions about its lithography based on past evidence and its rumored name. Since the Kirin 9000S and Kirin 9010 share the same ‘9’ naming scheme, it is possible that the latter is just a modified version of the silicon found in the Mate 60 series.
Huawei has followed this approach previously with the Kirin 9000SL, which is a slightly slower version of the Kirin 9000S, though it should be mentioned that it sports a varying CPU cluster. The Kirin 9010 could share similar properties with the Kirin 9000SL in terms of having a different CPU configuration, but we will wait for those details to come forth shortly. We also believe that just like the Kirin 9000S, Huawei has little choice but to use SMIC’s 7nm process for the Kirin 9010. We say this because, in an earlier teardown of Huawei’s Qingyun L540 laptop, it was found that the 5nm Kirin 9006C was actually fabricated by TSMC and not SMIC.
This led us to believe that SMIC’s 5nm node is not yet ready, though earlier reports have mentioned that
