One of the best ways to overcome 's series of difficult challenges is through co-op multiplayer, but the game doesn't do a great job of explaining how co-op progression and saves work. Players can summon AI allies, most of whom are based on actual historic figures from China's Three Kingdoms period, along with friends or random online players. While it's possible to play through the whole game solo, players will want their friends on their side when they take on some of 's toughest bosses.
Multiplayer in unlocks shortly after players complete the tutorial area and beat 's first boss. Multiplayer options are accessible from Battle Flag checkpoints, under the Online Lobby section. It's in that Online Lobby sub-menu that things get confusing; players are faced with three multiplayer options, Recruit, Co-Op, or Invade. Invade is the PVP mode, and it works similarly to invasions in other Soulslikes; players can't progress at all while invading another player's world. Recruit and Co-Op are different PvE modes, and progression works differently in each of them.

's Recruit option allows the player to call in AI allies or other random players at the cost of Tiger Seals. Recruiting is a great way for beginners to learn tips and tricks for getting past difficult areas. Recruits can join in the middle of a level from any Battle Flag, but any progress Recruits make in will not carry over to their own game. Even if they complete the level with the player who summoned them, when a Recruit returns to their own save file, they'll have to start over. Even so, Recruits are rewarded with Qi for their trouble.
