As Ashley becomes separated from Leon in , players have to solve several puzzles to progress through the story, including one where lanterns show phases of the moon. An important item called the Salazar Family Insignia is locked inside the mausoleum area in Chapter 9's castle section. In order to reach the Library area, players have to figure out which lanterns must go on which pedestals surrounding the stone structure in the central part of this crypt.
Ashley has plenty of tools that she can use to ward off enemies while reaching the Moon Lantern puzzle. The lantern needed also wards off enemies, as players will encounter several Knights before getting the Insignia. In fact, the majority of monsters arrive after players pick up the item from the mausoleum, as Ashley must flee to the Library while using the lantern to slow them down. At this point, helping Luis seems to have been a dangerous choice.

Once players get the Bunch of Keys that give them access to the Mausoleum, another puzzle must be completed on the way to the last flight of stairs in the area. There are three lanterns including the one players are already holding, each emitting a different light. One shows a crescent moon, another displays a star, and the lantern players possess uses a full moon pattern when placed.
The key to this puzzle is exactly where players put each lantern, as each needs to be in a specific spot.
