Gandrel is a small secret in Act 1 of that you can find by traveling through the Sunlit Wetlands in an area very close to the Riverside Teahouse Waypoint. Talking to him reveals he is a Gur, a wandering people with a close-knit community. Depending on whether Astarion is in your party or not, this interaction could be very peaceful or lead to an all-out battle against this slayer of monsters.

Gandrel is looking to capture Astarion for crimes the vampire spawn committed against his people, leading to tension that might result in an entire battle against the NPC in. If Astarion is in your party, he will attempt to kill Gandrel at the end of your conversation unless you tell him not to. Whether or not Astarion has revealed its vampire origin to you or not, the option to kill Gandrel ultimately falls to you.
Choosing to fight Gandrel can lead to a fairly simple combat encounter, with the reward being the hunter's crossbow, Gandrel's Aspiration, which gives you an advantage on rolls against Monstrosity-type creatures, similar to the True Strike spell.
