While BioShock fans eagerly await news on future installments of the first-person shooter franchise, mods for the original BioShock can offer something of a modern refresh for a classic game. With these mods, players might find the prospect of returning to BioShock series in 2022 even more compelling. Although BioShock only has a small modding community, fans may nevertheless be interested in the few mods that are available while they wait for more news on the highly anticipated BioShock 4.
First released in 2007, BioShock was designed as the spiritual successor of the highly influential survival horror, action RPG game System Shock 2. Players take on the role of Jack, the lone survivor of a plane crash in the foggy North Atlantic, who finds himself exploring the dystopian underwater city of Rapture. In Rapture, Jack finds most of the city’s inhabitants have gone mad, addicted to a substance known as ADAM which grants them supernatural powers. At the time, BioShock was widely considered a masterpiece and a landmark moment for the medium of video games due to its exceptional narrative, gameplay, and art direction. Two sequels were released, BioShock 2 and BioShock Infinite, with the latter also receiving similar critical acclaim. The BioShock IP continues to be popular; Netflix recently greenlit a BioShock movie while game studio Cloud Chamber continues to work on the next Bioshock game.
