With The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2 coming out next year, players could be seeing a lot more returning faces to the franchise, including the enigmatic Happy Mask Salesman from Majora's Mask. Not much is known about BOTW 2, save for what has been briefly shown in trailers and clips. Thus, anybody could be in the game. The first BOTW featured the return of some characters from the classic games including Impa, the gerudo, and the korok, so it stands to reason that others can return as well. The return of the Happy Mask Salesman would pay homage to an underrated classic while offering up some creepy vibes, and would be much better than having the worst Zelda character possibly returning in BOTW 2.
The Happy Mask Salesman first appeared in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time as, unsurprisingly, a mask salesman. His appearance was somewhat esoteric, really just becoming an optional sidequest NPC that Link could get cosmetic masks from. However, the Happy Mask Salesman returned in Majora's Mask and took a much bigger role. As the previous owner of the eponymous Majora's Mask, he is the first NPC to greet Link upon entering Termina and tasks him with recovering the evil mask. In the game, he had a very creepy laugh that he would always chuckle out when talked to, hung out in the drab and depressingly lit clock tower in the center of town, and frequently shifted faces from a laughing grin to a very angry scowl. Despite his relatively minor role in the rest of the game, he was nevertheless a memorable character. His darker shift from the first game accurately reflected the darker tone of the sequel itself.
