The new trailer for Black Adam shows the titular anti-hero being brought back to life and becoming a god, but his journey to get there is a complex one. Black Adam has a number of retconned origins going back to his initial creation in the pages of Fawcett Comics in 1945 leading up to the modern era, which has refined and altered his past in multiple ways to better fit into the DC Universe. The Black Adam trailer shows Dwayne Johnson's body in modern times being placed into a machine filled with containment fluid, while revealing images from his life during ancient times.
Black Adam was created by Otto Binder and C. C. Beck, first appearing in The Marvel Family #1 in 1945, where he is portrayed as an ancient Egyptian called Teth-Adam who is chosen by the wizard Shazam to become his champion and successor. Black Adam takes on the powers of the Egyptian deities and becomes near-invincible. However, Black Adam is corrupted by his power and kills the pharoah to rule Egypt himself. Shazam is unable to revoke the power and instead banishes Black Adam to a distant star. Adam returns after 5,000 years of traveling back to Earth and must face the new Shazam (Billy Batson) and the Marvel Family before being fatally defeated.

In the modern era, Black Adam's origin is slightly different. He still serves as a champion for the wizard Shazam, but his home is destroyed and his family is killed by the evil priest Ahk-Ton, forcing him to retake his home and kill the villain.
