Pixar’s Lightyear hasn’t been the success the studio was expecting, and Tim Allen’s response to it confirms Lightyear's biggest problem, which is also unfixable. Pixar continues to be a powerhouse in the world of animation, and while it has made history with many of its movies, not all of them have been a hit. Pixar’s biggest success is the Toy Story saga, which has now expanded with a spinoff movie titled Lightyear.
After a lot of speculation about Lightyear’s place in theToy Story timeline, an opening card explained that this is the movie that a young Andy watched in 1995 which led him to become a big fan of Buzz Lightyear. Lightyear, then, tells the story of Space Ranger Buzz Lightyear (voiced by Chris Evans), who tries to find a way back home after being marooned on a hostile planet with his commander and crew. His attempts to return home lead him to jump many years into the future, where he meets a new crew and comes across an even bigger problem than hyperspace traveling: the evil Emperor Zurg (James Brolin).

Unfortunately, Lightyear failed to deliver an interesting and entertaining story and its references to Toy Story felt forced most of the time, and it hasn’t performed well at the box office either. Critics and viewers have pointed out the different weaknesses of Lightyear, but the original voice actor of Buzz Lightyear, Tim Allen, pointed out the biggest one: Buzz Lightyear is the great character he is because of his dynamic with Woody, which is why the Buzz seen in Lightyear fails to connect with the audience, as Woody is obviously not included in this adventure.
