Hogwarts Legacy was one of 2023’s more controversial releases, thanks to it being attached to Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling and her transphobic views, but it was, unsurprisingly, also among the biggest games of the year, something that’s been reflected in its sales as well.
Speaking in a recent interview with Variety, WB Games president David Haddad revealed that Hogwarts Legacy has sold over 22 million units worldwide across all platforms as of the end of 2023. The game sold over 2 million units over the December Holiday period, while one would imagine that the launch of its Switch port late into the year would also have contributed significantly to its year-end sales boost.
“It’s not just the unit sold that I’m so proud of, it’s just that it delighted the fans so much,” Haddad said. “It brought Harry Potter to life in a new way for gamers where they could be themselves in this world, in this story. And that’s what the team at Avalanche set out to do when they were developing the game and I think that’s really why it resonated so well and remains the best-selling game of the year in the entire industry worldwide. That’s a position that typically is held by one of these incumbent’s sequel games and we’re so proud that we’ve been able to break into the top ranks.”
At last count, WB Games announced in May that Hogwarts Legacy had sold over 15 million units, raking in over $1 billion in revenue, so it’s clearly kept up an impressive pace of sales. Job ads have indicated that developer Avalanche Software has another major AAA game in the works, and based on Hogwarts Legacy’s sales, it would seem safe to assume that their next projet is a sequel to the action RPG.
