When Helldivers 2 introduces sweeping balancing changes or new stratagems, it does so on the live build. So, if nerfs are too harsh or buffs too strong, the community has to wait for the next patch to address concerns.
It's an unusual process for a live service game. Most have public test servers (or PTS) where players can trial the update and give feedback to the developer so that things can be tweaked ahead of the full release. Luckily, Helldivers 2 is looking to introduce its own.
"Are there talks of [implementing] a test server for Helldivers 2?" @FruityF00L asked in the official Discord. "So that we are able to test new weapons [and] stratagems before they get implemented into the live game?"
"Yes, there are!" community manager Thomas 'Twinbeard' Petersson replied. "Can't say for sure there will be or at what stage we're in regarding setting [something] up, but alternatives similar to that are being discussed, yes."
In a lot of cases--like PUBG, The Elder Scrolls Online, and The Division--a PTS is a separate downloadable version of the game. This is usually exclusive to PC, meaning that console players can't participate, but Helldivers 2 fans have an idea of how to bring everyone together.
"Drop us in a planet labelled BETA or TEST or something," XannyMax2 suggested. "The new guns are on the ground or have a special stratagem that calls them down, pick them up and use them. Provide feedback in social channels outside the game. Then, that particular test goes away and the Warbond that unlocks it comes out.
Players are unhappy with the Polar Patriots Warbond , but with a PTS, Arrowhead would be taking on constructive criticism rather than facing backlash.
"No NDAs, no need to lock out PS5 players, offers a 'try before you buy' kinda thing, even if it might be borked initially. No need to rewrite the game to make giving feedback possible".
However developer Arrowhead ends up implementing a test server, we at least know it's discussing the idea.
