Last week, Helldivers 2 players were given a Major Order to kill a staggering two billion bots, and expectedly, they failed. On the surface, that means they didn't unlock the Anti-Tank Mines, but community manager Katherine 'Baskinator' Baskin revealed that there are much worse ramifications unfolding behind the scenes.
"The war now escalates into what is officially called 'The Second Galactic War'," Baskinator said in the game's Discord (as reported by Games Radar). "All conflict leading up to this was merely an elaborate special operation."
With the war effort only getting worse, Super Earth is scrambling to get fresh troops on the frontlines to keep the Automatons and Terminid at bay, so Helldivers will soon be "tasked with guarding training facilities so that each recruit can be given their rigorous 72 hour basic training."
The big question looming over every Helldiver is how the war will escalate. The automatons have proven formidable time and time again, and the Terminid are rapidly spreading and mutating, with enormous tunnels even pointing to the return of Hive Lords, but there's much worse on the horizon than the two factions we've been fighting so far.
Automatons hold Cyberstan, AKA the home of their creators, the Cyborgs. These former Super Earth citizens fled the planet in defiance of its 'propaganda' and sought to tear down the institutions behind the Helldivers. With the planet now occupied by the clankers, it's only a matter of time before Cyborgs join the fold and bolster their army.
But that's not the worst of it. Cloaked warships and unidentified blue lasers have been spotted on the battlefield, with illegal transmissions intercepted showing a strange aquatic alien species known as the Illuminate. They once offered Super Earth a peace treaty, but the government declined their offer and continued fighting. Supposedly, the Illuminate were eradicated by the year 2184, though that looks increasingly untrue.
