Samsung's latest foldable phones, the Z Flip 5 and the Z Fold 5, are more about refinement than evolution. Along with the requisite high-end specs, the Galaxy Z Flip 5 (starting at $999.99) and the Galaxy Z Fold 5 (starting at $1,799.99) now fold completely flat thanks to a simpler, gap-free hinge. In addition, the Z Flip 5 has a much larger outer screen than the previous model, likely to compete with the Motorola Razr+.
So although these phones don't take foldables to a whole new level, they look like promising upgrades over the Z Flip 4 and the Z Fold 4 that we're excited to test when they come out on August 11. Until then, we got to spend some time with the phones ahead of Samsung's Unpacked event and have some first impressions to share ahead of our full reviews.
When closed, the Galaxy Z Flip 5 measures 3.35 by 2.83 by 0.59 inches (HWD), which means it's taller but a lot thinner than the Z Flip 4 (3.34 by 2.83 by 0.67 inches). The gap on the Flip 4 gives it a slightly wedged shape that's 0.63 inches at its thinnest, making the Flip 5's svelte size all the more impressive. Despite the new model's larger screen and updated hinge, the Flip 5 still weighs the same as its predecessor (6.6 ounces). The hinge feels very sturdy and can hold pretty much whatever angle you open it to.
The outer display on the Flip 5 spans 3.4 inches across and has a resolution of 748 by 720 pixels, a substantial upgrade from the Flip 4's 1.9-inch, 512-by-260 screen. It sports a satisfactory refresh rate of 60Hz, though I would have liked it to match the 120Hz rate of the Fold 5's outer screen.
Two cameras also sit on the outside, though they haven’t changed since last year. That means you get the same 12MP ultra-wide sensor and 12MP
