GTA 6 finally has a release date, 2025. When exactly it will launch in that year we don't know. But the fact it's not releasing in 2024 has upset some fans who are now complaining about the 'long' wait. As per usual, the Half-Life community has sprung out of the woodwork to poke fun.
"GTA players: having to wait 12 years for GTA 6," astumpyhyena tweeted. "Half-Life players: having to wait 16 years for a prequel game to come out and tease the third game that won't come out for another 20 years."
Half-Life 3 was a dead joke a decade ago, but here we are, still asking where it is. The last mainline Half-Life game was in 2007, with Alyx being a spin-off prequel VR exclusive. It reviewed incredibly well and is often heralded as the pinnacle of the medium, but we've yet to see the cliffhanger from all those years ago get resolved. Each GTA, on the other hand, is standalone, so no burning questions are waiting to be answered.

Of course, it's not just Half-Life fans in this boat anymore. It's been 12 years since Skyrim and The Elder Scrolls 6 only just entered development. Granted, there's an ongoing MMO with several story expansions, much as GTA has its separate still-supported Online mode, so it's not nearly as dry. But then again, Half-Life fans got Alyx. Basically, good luck if you're a fan of all three.
Another contender for fanbase-most-kept-in-the-dark-and-waiting is the Hollow Knight community. They should add an award for this at next year's TGA, really.
