With an impressive second weekend hold, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 topped the box office again with $60.5 million. The James Gunn-directed flick has made $525 million worldwide, meaning it's already surpassed Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania's haul of $475 million.
Deadline reports Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 pulled off the best followup hold at the domestic box office for a Marvel Cinematic Universe movie since the Covid-19 pandemic. The film only dropped 49% after dethroning The Super Mario Bros. Movie in the first weekend of May. For comparison, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quatumania saw a 70% dip in its second weekend at the box office. Strong word of mouth is cited as one of the reasons, as the third Guardians film has an A- CinemaScore.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie continues to be a Super Star at the box office. The Nintendo and Illumination film earned another $13 million domestically to come in second place. The animated flick has made over $1 billion worldwide.
Meanwhile, two new releases didn't make much noise at the box office. The Book Club: The Next Chapter charted at No. 3 with $6.5 million. Then, the Ben Affleck-starring vehicle Hypnotic basically bombed at No. 6 with $2.3 million.
