IAm Groot, the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy spin-off, can bring fresh energy to the MCU and avoid the franchise's biggest criticism. Despite his limited vocabulary, the tree-like alien Groot has become one of the MCU's most loved characters thanks to his gentle and kind personality. Groot has appeared in a few different forms since his introduction, first debuting as a fully grown adult in Guardians of the Galaxy, before being reborn as Baby Groot after sacrificing himself for his friends, and then becoming a teenager in Avengers: Endgame.
Following speculation of a Groot solo movie, in December 2020 Marvel Studios announced that the character would get his own spinoff show, I Am Groot, which will be available on Disney+ in August 2022. I Am Groot will consist of five animated shorts, making a change from the typical Marvel release. Vin Diesel will return as the voice of Groot in the series which promises to be unique compared to other MCU offerings.

The main way thatI Am Groot will differentiate itself from other MCU productions is that viewers will not need to do any homework before watching. After the announcement that the series will land on Disney+ in Summer 2022, Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn took to Twitter to clarify that the animated shorts will not necessarily be part of the Guardians saga, suggesting that I Am Groot is unlikely to have lots of links to other parts of the MCU canon. The news is a welcome change because rather than having to catch up on what has happened before the series, viewers will be able to enjoy I Am Groot on a more casual level.
