The Guardians of the Galaxy are coming back with their third adventure in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as part of Phase 4, but a theory reveals how this team of misfits has been setting up a major cosmic crossover for Phase 5. Although the Infinity Saga is now over, the MCU continues expanding with more characters, events, and stories, and while Phase 4 is introducing new characters and concepts, it’s also expanding the stories of well-established characters, among those the Guardians of the Galaxy.
This group of space misfits made their MCU debut in James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy in 2014, where they came across Ronan the Accuser (Lee Pace) as he searched for the Orb containing the Power Stone, this under Thanos’ orders. Although they didn’t really get along at first, Peter Quill/Star-Lord (Chris Pratt), Gamora (Zoe Saldaña), Drax (Dave Bautista), Rocket Raccoon (Bradley Cooper), and Groot (Vin Diesel) became a team, and they were later joined by Mantis (Pom Klementieff) and Nebula (Karen Gillan) in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. The Guardians were present in the biggest battles the MCU has seen for far, but their influence and impact on this connected universe might be even bigger, as they could be setting up a major crossover event.
