Eternals expanded on the role of the Celestials in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, showing that they aren’t on the side of humans, but a theory suggests that one Celestial actually cared for planet Earth, and he might have sacrificed himself to save humans. The Marvel Cinematic Universe continues its expansion with its highly-anticipated Phase 4, which is introducing new characters, concepts, and events while also continuing the stories of well-established characters. Among the new characters in the MCU are the Eternals, who turned out to be the oldest superhero team on Earth.
Directed by Chloé Zhao, Eternals introduced the title team, a group of synthetic beings created by the Celestial Arishem the Judge and sent to Earth to protect it from the Deviants, their evil counterparts. After the Deviants were defeated, the Eternals stayed on Earth to help humanity evolve but they weren’t allowed to interfere in their conflicts, and the Eternals eventually learned the truth about their mission. Once Sersi (Gemma Chan) took over the team’s leadership after Ajak’s (Salma Hayek) death, she discovered that they were sent to Earth to prepare it for the birth of another Celestial, Tiamut, whose seed was planted in the center of the planet, and it needed a certain amount of energy from sentient lifeforms to grow, thus why the Eternals were left on Earth to help humans.
