Driving Mode in Google Maps is one of the most handy features of the app. Whether you are driving yourself or driving with someone, it can always be useful as it allows for a much more convenient and safer way of navigating with audio queues, helping you navigate better. However, if the latest information is legit, we might be saying goodbye to it in the future.
9to5Google spotted two strings in the Google app, and they believe that Driving Mode in Google Maps could soon be going away. The first string mentions an unspecified "view" feature that is not going to be around in February 2024.
As far as the second string, it reads, “to call, message, or play media while navigating, tap the mic to use Assistant,” looking at the strings, it does appear that Google is willing to get rid of the Driving Mode in Google Maps, and instead, wants the users to use Assistant while navigating and driving. This does make sense, as having audio interactions can be helpful while driving, but in terms of functionality, especially when it comes to proper navigation, it only downgrades the overall experience.
As someone who regularly uses the Driving Mode on Google Maps most of the time, I think it is one of the best features the app has because it makes navigation super-easy and convenient, especially with the audio output. However, without this feature, a lot of drivers might find themselves in a rut because they would have to look at the screen every now and then, especially if they are navigating around an area they are not familiar with. Whatever the case might be, we are going to keep you posted, and at this point, we can only hope that Google is not planning on getting rid of this beloved feature.
