James Gunn Storyboarded Superman: Legacy ‘A Long Time Ago’
Superman: Legacy director has spoken further about the storyboarding process for the DC Studios movie.
On Threads, Gunn was asked how strictly he typically sticks to his storyboards when making a movie. He replied that he used to stick to them closely between 2006’s Slither and 2017’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, but that he’s gotten looser about it and changes things when he finds “magic.”
When asked how many storyboards there are, Gunn said that, though he doesn’t count, there are “thousands” of storyboards for the upcoming DC Universe movie. The director also revealed that Superman: Legacy was storyboarded “a long time ago,” as he finds planning to be much easier when there’s a foundation of storyboards present.
The titular role in Superman: Legacy is being played by David Corenswet (Pearl, The Politician), while Lois Lane will be played by The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel star Rachel Brosnahan. They’re joined by Nicholas Hoult, Skyler Gisondo, María Gabriela De Faría, Sara Sampaio, Isabela Merced, Nathan Fillion, Edi Gathegi, Anthony Carrigan, and more. The film is set to release on July 11, 2025.
“Superman: Legacy tells the story of Superman’s journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent of Smallville, Kansas,” reads the movie’s official synopsis. “He is the embodiment of truth, justice and the American way, guided by human kindness in a world that sees kindness as old-fashioned.”
