God of War: Ragnarok - Valhalla may be a roguelite take on the formula of the base game, but many are the mechanics seen in the main adventure that made the jump into the expansion with a couple of tweaks.
Among these are walled-off areas that can only be reached to fulfilling certain conditions. Here's how you can unlock the Sanctuary Barriers to get access to these areas.
As you make your way through Valhalla, you will find in the safe areas between fights some smoky barriers that prevent access to additional areas. While the barriers show a lock icon that suggests they can be opened, the game doesn't exactly elaborate on how to do so the first time you encounter one.
To unlock the Sanctuary Barriers, you will need to use a Sanctuary Barrier Key. These keys can be crafted via the Tablet of Influence at the Shore main hub, but only after you have made some progress in your exploration of Valhalla and have defeated Tyr for the first time. The first key can be crafted for only 100 Spirit Seals, but the price will go up every time you purchase one. While this looks costly, unlocked Barriers will stay unlocked for the entire duration of the game, so they are well worth their Spirit Seals cost.
Unlocking Sanctuary Barriers in God of War: Ragnarok - Valhalla is something you will want to do as often as you can, especially if you are having trouble winning fights, as you will find a variety of items that can help you make some progress, including Fleeting Echoes and Mastery Seals. If you're aiming to see everything the expansion has to offer, you will also want to unlock all Barriers, as you can also find new cosmetics inside the new areas.
