Hungry customers in Virginia can now get Uber Eats delivered by an autonomous robot.
Following a successful pilot in Miami, Uber Eats and its AI-powered partner Cartken are expanding into Fairfax, Virginia.
The program began operating today with select merchants in the city's Mosaic shopping district, home to more than 40 restaurants. Early participants include Greek taverna Our Mom Eugenia, pizzeria Pupatella, and Indian-inspired RASA. Just as in Florida, AI-powered bots will roam the sidewalks of Fairfax, delivering meals and providing curbside pickup to locals.
The Uber alliance is Cartken's first formal partnership with an on-demand delivery app beyond college campuses. But Uber Eats has been testing the concept of autonomous delivery in Los Angeles with Serve Robotics and Motional. LA trials kicked off in May 2022, with Serve robots focusing on shorter trips around West Hollywood, and Motional cars handling long-haul deliveries in Santa Monica.
In California, eligible customers see an option at checkout to have food delivered by autonomous vehicle; Uber did not specify how it works in Virginia.
"With our shared passion for innovative urban design, sustainability, and technology, we believe that robot delivery with Uber Eats is a great fit for Fairfax customers looking for a fun and convenient way to grab their next meal," says Noah Zych, head of autonomous mobility and delivery at Uber.
