France Retirement Age Protests Have Spilled Over Into Animal Crossing: New Horizons
An Animal Crossing: New Horizons player is showing solidarity with the ongoing protests in France with a custom in-game creation. Protests have erupted in France following an executive decree from President Emmanuel Macron raising the country's retirement age by two years, from 62 to 64. Macron did so without the involvement of France's parliament, which failed to pass a no-confidence vote in Macron's government. Protests have only increased since, now reaching the humble homes of Animal Crossing: New Horizons players.
As the weekend began in France, protests in the country reached their largest size yet. Officials claimed over 1.1 million protestors have taken to the streets, though French unions claim as many as 3.5 million French protestors are involved. The protests aren't focused solely on Macron's decision to raise France's retirement age, but also on his executive right to issue decrees without a vote. Macron has dismissed criticism and is refusing to backtrack, calling the decree a «necessity.»
