Last year's infamous Pokemon exhibit at the Van Gogh Museum resulted in four employees being fired for not following the codes of conduct for staff.
2023 wasn't the greatest year for Pokemon as a whole following Scarlet & Violet's weak launch at the tail end of 2022, but there was one moment that stood out as being the absolute worst - the collaboration with the Van Gogh museum. What was meant to be a celebration of the museum's 50th anniversary and a chance to get some unique merchandise and a Pikachu with Grey Felt Hat promo card turned into an absolute nightmare.
Everyone knows how rabid fans can get for unique Pokemon cards and merch, but the Van Gogh exhibit took things to an extreme as fans swarmed the museum and then went on to scalp the unique card for up to £500. It was a total mess that quickly got shut down due to how poorly fans were acting (with Pokemon even apologising for the situation), but it turns out that it wasn't just fans acting out.
As shared by Eurogamer and originally reported by Dutch site Het Parool, at least four employees at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam were fired following misconduct at the Pokemon exhibition. The museum didn't directly confirm how many members of staff had been let go, but it did say that security guards and public service employees were fired last December due to not following procedure and disobeying the codes of conduct for staff.
According to anonymous sources who still work at the museum and were in contact with Het Parool, one fired employee allegedly embezzled a box of the limited Pokemon cards, while another was let go for telling visitors when they could buy tickets for the exhibition before the information was publicly known and shared.
“We emphasize that we view this as an incident.”
