Warning! Spoilers ahead for Flashpoint Beyond #2.
Probably no character in the DC Universe has more of a heartbreaking origin than Batman, but the Flashpoint Universe shows exactly why it had to happen that way.
The alternate universe of Flashpoint was created when another tragic character, the Flash, attempted to change his origin story. Barry Allen goes back in time and saves his mother from dying. But this one event alters reality so that Bruce Wayne dies as a child during a mugging instead of his parents. This triggers a sequence of events that leads to Bruce's father, Thomas Wayne, eventually becoming a new version of Batman while his mother goes insane and becomes a new version of the Joker.

This universe also isn't kind to Harvey Dent. After he is killed, his son is brought under the care of Thomas while Harvey's wife goes insane at Arkham Asylum. In Flashpoint Beyond #3 by Geoff Johns, Tim Sheridan, Jeremy Adams, Xermanico, and Mikel Janin, Thomas goes to visit her as Batman and she sees right through his mask, knowing exactly who he is. She then chastises Thomas for being a terrible husband even before Bruce was killed. Thomas cheated on his wife Martha and was an abusive alcoholic.
Thomas's behavior before Bruce died is very revealing into what type of character he is. It also explains a lot about what type of Batman he becomes. Compared to Bruce, Thomas is much more violent and even uses firearms. His brutality and rage most likely stem from who he was as a person beforehand.
