Of all the strange outfits Batman's worn in his career, one garish costume stands out for a particularly interesting reason. The Batman of Zur-En-Arrh isn't just an assault on the eyes, it's Bruce Wayne's ultimate weapon against the worst kind of enemies.
In preparation for his war on crime, Batman pushed his mind, body and spirit well beyond the limits of average people. After traveling the world and training with monks, assassins, spies and a whole host of martial artists, Bruce turned his body into a machine that was equipped to handle the crime that awaited him in Gotham. The training Bruce Wayne underwent to become Batman was necessary because the hero knew that Gotham wasn't a city to be taken lightly. He knew monsters were lurking in the shadows and that if he showed any vulnerability, those monsters would exploit his weaknesses and use it to destroy him.

Nothing showed the extent of Batman's preparedness better than his backup personality that was introduced in the «Batman RIP» arc of Batman by Grant Morrison and Tony Daniel. The criminal organization the Black Glove has targeted Batman and its leader, the insidious Dr. Hurt, launches a full scale assault on the Dark Knight. Using the trigger words “Zur-En-Arrh,” Hurt puts Batman into a fugue state that allows him to break through Bruce's mental defenses and overtake his life. In his lost and drugged-up state, Bruce takes on a new persona, the Batman of Zur-En-Arrh. Unlike Batman's normal self, this Batman is a more efficient and brutal version of the Dark Knight.
