Even though Batman relies on his public persona as Bruce Wayne to protect his work as Gotham's number one guardian, he may be neglecting a very important aspect: his romantic life.
To the people of Gotham, the scion of the Wayne fortune is many things. A philanthropist, a captain of industry and most notably, a wealthy playboy. To his credit, the latter is an intentionally planned part of how Batman keeps his identity a secret. By playing up his public persona as a womanizer who likes to party, Batman is able to keep people from discovering the secret about Bruce Wayne. That's not to say Bruce has never fallen for women in his public life, but more often than not, Batman keeps his romantic escapades to a minimum. Any dating as Bruce is strictly to keep up appearances and keep people from discovering his alter ego.

But that line of thinking backfired on Batman tremendously when an ex saw firsthand how callous Bruce could actually be. In Batman and Robin #18 by Paul Cornell, Chris Jones, and Scott McDaniel, Dick Grayson meets Absence, a new villain on the Gotham scene. She tells the hero that before her “rebirth” she had a romance with Batman's civilian identity. Though she was quick to notice how Bruce didn't show much of an interest in their dating, Absence never got to tell Bruce her feelings before she was shot in the head while attending a yacht party. Amazingly, Absence survived, albeit with a gaping hole in her head. After recovering, she decided to reveal that she was alive at her own funeral, eagerly expecting to see a grieving Bruce. Instead, all she sees are flowers with a card signed "Greatest condolences."
