Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth introduces new playable characters, but not everyone made the cut this time around. Vincent Valentine and Cid are now the only two companions from the original Final Fantasy 7 to not be playable in the remake trilogy so far, as they sit Rebirth out.
However, Rebirth's director Naoki Hamaguchi has now hinted that this won't always be the case. In an interview with Variety, Hamaguchi suggests that the pair could be made playable in a sequel, or possibly even DLC for Rebirth, bringing back every companion from the original game.
These comments are made when Variety asks Hamaguchi directly if there are plans to include Vincent and Cid at a later date. While Hamaguchi doesn't give us an exact answer, he strongly suggests that this will be the case.
"While I don’t have any clear DLC information to share with you, we know it’d be very exciting for players to have new playable characters going into future titles," says Hamaguchi. "We didn’t want to release everything all at once and wanted to keep the excitement and anticipation going for these two characters."
So, certainly don't expect Hamaguchi to get any more specific than that anytime soon. At the very least, his comments don't rule out the pair being made playable in a DLC for Rebirth, just as Yuffie was introduced in the Remake expansion, Intergrade, so we might not have to wait until the next full game.
At the very least, this time around, we have the newcomers Cait Sith, Yuffie, and Red XIII to mix things up. And of course, the writers may have wanted to stop the game from being too crowded, since there's a lot of story to get through after Remake barely even scratched the surface. In the same interview, Hamaguchi says that they had decided for quite some time that Rebirth would end on the final moment of the first disc in the original release, so there's still plenty to explore in both DLC and the sequel.
