This next release in the long-running RPG series will follow protagonist Clive Rosfield, son of an archduke and ward of the powerful dark Eikon Ifrit. Although other party members will purportedly join him at certain points during his journey, they seem to act entirely on their own — Clive will likely be 's sole playable character for most of its runtime.
This is a departure from the usual formula, in which players usually have some control over up to four party members in turn-based or real-time combat. The last release to include multiple playable characters,, allows for a party of three. Players can switch between characters at will, although it's also possible to issue single-use commands to party members not in the player's control. The previous mainline installment,, has a fully controllable protagonist and three party members whom players could ask to unleash special, collaborative attacks. However, previews for suggest that Clive's best friend, Torgal, will be controllable in a similar manner, which might be preferable over multiple party members.

A post previewing shows what appears to be a fast-paced, real-time action combat system. Switching between player characters while stringing together complicated, perfect summon-based combos in could distract from the task at hand, and even cause players to miss signs of an incoming enemy attack.
