A new job is coming to Final Fantasy 14 with this summer’s Dawntrail expansion: the Pictomancer, a magic user who casts their spells with a paintbrush and palette. Square Enix and FF14 producer/director Naoki Yoshida revealed the Pictomancer at this weekend’s Fan Festival 2024 in Tokyo alongside other new additions to the massively multiplayer online role-playing game.
The Pictomancer is described as a magical, ranged DPS job that uses mixed aether as its medium, painting creatures, weapons, and even landscapes to transform them from imagination to reality. Those conjurings take time, as seen in the Pictomancer gameplay teaser above, so the job also can use instant-cast abilities.
But it’s the flair of painting and spellcasting that will make the Pictomancer an appealing new option when Dawntrail launches this summer. Final Fantasy 14’s next expansion will also add a new playable race, the female Hrothgar; a newcity, called Solution Nine; a new limited job, Beastmaster; new dungeons; and much more. You can see those new features in the videos below.
Final Fantasy 14: Dawntrail, the MMO’s fifth expansion, is due sometime this summer. It will send players on a journey to the new region of Tural for a “vacation” after the events of 2021’s Endwalker narrative. Final Fantasy 14 is currently available on Mac, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and Windows PC. An Xbox Series X version is coming this spring and will support cross-play with other versions of the game.
