Fallout 2, the second entry in the series, which has recently seen a surge in popularity thanks to the Amazon Prime Video TV show, is getting remade by a team of dedicated fans in the style of the third and fourth entries in the series.
In a new interview with The Gamer, Damion Daponte, a freelance video editor who leads the Project Arroyo development team of over 100 modders, revealed some details on the project. The project is attempting to remake the second entry in the series as an open-world role-playing game using Fallout 4's engine. As the original game wasn't big enough, the team will also expand the world and offer a condensed-down version of San Francisco to explore.
The Fallout 2 fan-made remake will also rework some of the mechanics of the original, such as random encounters, which are not needed in an open-world RPG, bring back the classic Pip-Boy, and feature some assets lifted from New Vegas, which provided a better look at the New California Republic. Fallout 4's Power Armor will also be back in the remake, as the developer feels the way it works in the game makes more sense compared to how it functions in Fallout 3 and New Vegas.
While a release date for the Fallout 2 Project Arroyo remake has yet to be announced, there's a good chance the fan-made remake will be released on Steam. "It’s just a platform that everyone has," Daponte said, "it’s easier to access, easier to update, easier to install - it’s more efficient. We would have to figure out all the specificities, making it so you have Fallout 2 and Fallout 4 and all of its DLC to make sure there are no legal issues. But we’re still looking into it.”
