Warning: spoilers ahead for Future State: Gotham #11!
In the grim future of DC’s Future State: Gotham, the rise of the Magistrate and appearance of a new Joker have Red Hood and the rest of the Bat-Family scrambling to keep people safe in a world seemingly devoid of Bruce Wayne. However, as Red Hood battles the Next Joker and his army of hacked police robots, Jason lets slip an interesting opinion about the original Joker — namely that he found the Clown Prince of Crime to be funny!
Future State: Gotham #11 by Dennis Culver and Geoffo follows Red Hood, operating as Peacekeeper Red, in the Magistrate-controlled Gotham of the future. After successfully apprehending Warmonger and exonerating Jace Fox’s Batman, the remaining Bat-Family and the Next Batman must now face a new player on the scene: the Next Joker. The Next Joker has taken over the robotic drones the Magistrate and GCPD use to police the city, and is hunting down the city’s kingpin criminals, like Tobias Whale and the Court of Owls. With the help of Harley Quinn, Hunter Panic, and the Next Batman, Red Hood takes on the Next Joker, hoping to bring his reign of terror to an end.

The Next Joker seems to be a far cry from the original Clown Prince of Crime. As a hulking, mutated, sadistic cannibal, the physical differences from most iterations of the character are already stark. Furthermore, there’s no real panache or humor to the character. His “jokes” are flat and his schemes lack the intricacy and grandeur characteristic of the original.
