Jared Bush, co-director of Disney's latest movie musical Encanto, says that he's spent hours watching "We Don't Talk About Bruno" videos on TikTok. Encanto follows the story of Mirabel (Stephanie Beatriz), the sole member of the Madrigal family to not receive superhuman powers from a magical candle. As the events of the film unfold, members of the family begin to lose their powers without explanation. Mirabel takes it upon herself to unravel the mystery behind her family's dwindling powers, eventually leading her to her ostracized uncle, Bruno (John Leguizamo). Bruno possesses the power of precognition, which Mirabel believes may be the key to restoring her family's magic.
As Mirabel investigates her family in search of Bruno's whereabouts, the film erupts into the hit musical number, «We Don't Talk About Bruno.» The song features members of the Madrigal family as well as local villagers who offer their sensationalized accounts about Bruno, eventually culminating in a densely layered ensemble climax. Shortly after the film's release, «We Don't Talk About Bruno» exploded in popularity, further aided by the song's versatile use on the video platform, TikTok.
