Although many CSI franchise fans were glad to hear that CSI: Vegas season 2 will see the long-awaited return of Marg Helgenberger’s Catherine, the show will now need to explain what drew Catherine away from the FBI. For many seasons of CSI, Catherine was almost as central to the show as Jorja Fox’s Sara Sidle or William Petersen’s Gil Grissom. The veteran star appeared in CSI until season 12, while Fox left the series after season 8 and Petersen left in season 9.
To be fair, both Fox and Petersen returned and ended up playing central roles in the 2021 spinoff CSI: Vegas. However, the pair announced that they would not return for CSI: Vegas season 2 earlier this year, prompting the show’s creators to hire Helgenberger for the upcoming outing. Although Catherine is the perfect character for the CSI franchise to bring back inCSI: Vegas season 2, the show will still need to explain what happened to her tenure in the FBI.

Near the end of CSI season 12, Helgenberger’s departure from the show was justified in-universe when Catherine left the team to work at Quantico. Helgenberger’s CSI: Vegas season 2 return will be good for the spinoff series, but it will likely cause fans to wonder what happened to her FBI job. Catherine didn’t leave the lab for no reason, with the character going into hiding late in season 12 due to threats on her life from a set of assassins. When the assassins were killed off, she never returned, holding onto her FBI job instead. That's a significant decision for someone who had previously been so devoted to the CSI team.
