Courteney Cox says she took on the role of Gale Weathers in Scream because of how different it was from her role on Friends. Cox became a household name for her role as Monica onthe mega-hit sitcom, which ran for 10 seasons and 236 episodes. She recently reunited with the cast for Friends: The Reunion, which premiered on HBO Max in 2021, and returned for Scream (2022) along with original co-stars Neve Campbell and David Arquette.
The Scream franchise primarily follows Sydney Prescott (Campbell), who finds herself repeatedly terrorized by Ghostface, a masked killer alter-ego taken on by new individuals in each film. Cox plays reporter Gale Weathers, initially built up to be an antagonist through her rude manner and fame-seeking methods, before teaming up with Sydney and local cop Dewey Riley (Arquette) to stop the Ghostface murders. She has said that her role in the Screamfranchise helped prepare her for her new series Shining Vale, which features similar horror-comedy stylings.

While being interviewed on Hot Ones, Cox talks about how she took on the role of Weathers so she wouldn't be typecast. She mentions that her work on Friends, as well as her recurring character on Family Ties, gave her a reputation for more wholesome parts. She says Weathers' prickly nature helped her avoid getting stuck in certain types of roles later in her career. Read her quote below:
