HBO announces a release date for a feature documentary version of the Broadway hit Spring Awakening. Dynamic duo Duncan Sheik and Steven Sater first birthed the coming-of-age rock show onto the great white way in 2006. Based on Frank Wedekind's 1891 German play of the same name, Spring Awakening the musical showcases adolescent's inner and outer struggle to fit into societal norms. The original production earned massive acclaim, including eight Tony Awards, four Drama Desk Awards and even a Grammy. It also launched the careers of now-pop culture mainstays like Jonathan Groff, Lea Michele, Skylar Astin and more.
Over a decade and a half later, HBO announced that it will release Spring Awakening: Those You've Known on their channel and HBO Max streamer on May 3rd at 9 p.m. ET/PT. The documentary style film reunites the original team for a one-night only concert version of the show. While it was produced as a benefit for the Actors Fund, the evening will now benefit viewers around the world as they witness the cast together once again.

Spring Awakening's cult fanbase and the star power of its players has only grown in years since the first production. For instance, Michele became a breakout talent for her role on Glee. Meanwhile, Groff has reached new heights with iconic properties like Hamilton and the Frozen franchise, in addition to Netflix's Mindhunter and his own stint on Glee. He also serves as an executive producer on the upcoming Broadway documentary.
