Warning: Contains spoilers for Scream 2022.
Following the most recent installment’s success, the release date for Scream 6 has been fast-tracked, ignoring a major part of what made the later sequels so good. Scream 2022 was released in January 2022 to positive reviews, and Scream 6 has officially received a release date of March 31,2023. The fifth installment was a worthy successor to Wes Craven’s previous entries, but foregoing any delay between releases could undermine a key factor that benefited the fourth and fifth movies' appeal.
Scream 2022 follows Sam Carpenter (Melissa Barrera), who returns to her hometown of Woodsboro following an attack on her younger sister, Tara (Jenna Ortega). With a new Ghostface killer threatening to reveal dark secrets from the town’s past, Sam resolves to discover their identity and put an end to the terror. Scream 2022 also unites Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell) with fellow legacy characters including Dewey Riley (David Arquette) and Gale Weathers (Courteney Cox), with the latter already confirmed for Scream 6.

The previous two movies had considerable distance from their predecessors, using their time gaps to explore legacies and influence character development. There is precedence within the franchise to argue Scream 6 can provide a thrilling next chapter within one year. However, a hasty turnaround could harm the story, and making the sequel for the wrong reasons would tarnish Scream 2022’s fitting ending.
