Elden Ring Nightreign is removing one of the Souls series’ best-loved features, as the developer believes players won’t have enough time to engage with the mechanic.
Players in Elden Ring Nightreign won’t be able to leave messages for players or read those left by other players. This feature, which dates back to Demon’s Souls, allowed players to point the way to hidden treasure, leave crude jokes, or trick players into jumping off of ledges.
Speaking to IGN Japan, director Junya Ishizaki said: “You can still see the ghosts of other players, but the ability to leave messages has been removed. The reason we removed the message feature is that in this game, where each session is about 40 minutes long, there is no time to write your own message, and no time to read messages written by others.”
Another significant change is that currently, according to the developers, foes defeated in battle won’t respawn when the player rests at a Site of Grace. In the Souls games, players trade off the ability to heal and save their game at certain checkpoints for the downside of all minor enemies respawning.
Announced on stage at The Game Awards in December, Elden Ring: Nightreign will allow multiple players to take on bosses in co-op gameplay.
A network test for Elden Ring: Nightreign will be held in February.
This summer, Miyazaki said there was outside interest in making an Elden Ring adaptation, possibly a film.
