Immortals of Aveum, the first-person magic shooter from Ascendant Studios and publisher EA, will be released this summer, it’s been announced.
The game, which boasts a development team including Call of Duty and Dead Space veterans, will be available for PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S on July 20, 2023.
Immortals of Aveum follows Jak, a Battlemage who discovers that he possesses magic powers later in life.

“With his newfound potential, Jak is reluctantly thrust into mankind’s endless war for the control of magic. Now, after centuries of stalemate between Aveum’s two most powerful kingdoms, Rasharn has pushed Lucium and its allies to the brink,” according to an official description of the game.
Based in San Rafael, California, Ascendant is an independent studio founded by CEO and game director Bret Robbins, who was creative director on Visceral Games’ original Dead Space as well as Sledgehammer’s Call of Duty games Modern Warfare 3, Advanced Warfare and World War 2.
In a recent interview, Robbins told VGC: “The idea of doing a magic shooter was something that was just kicking around in my head for a long time. It seemed like the type of game that I really liked to play. I love fantasy games. I love shooters. Most fantasy games were more slow-paced RPG-style games. And it just seemed to me like a missed opportunity that no one was really making anything like that. “
The game’s cast includes Gina Torres (Firefly, Suits) as General Kirkan, Darren Barnett (Never Have I Ever) as Jak, Antonio Aakeel (Slow Horses, I Came By) as Devyn, and Lily Cowles (Roswell, New Mexico, Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War) as Zendara.
