After making fans wait eagerly for the release update of, visionary filmmaker Denis Villeneuve has firmly taken over the reins of the project much earlier than expected. Villeneuve introduced viewers to the Dune universe in 2021 before upping the ante with its celebrated sequel, which took the audience by storm in 2024. Following the success of Dune: Part Two, however, the director exclaimed that it would take some time for him to helm the third film in the franchise. Nevertheless, he has now begun work on the story of the much-awaited threequel and recently gave insight into what motivated him to expedite the production of Dune: Messiah.
According to Villeneuve, fans’ unanimous love and appreciation for the Dune sequel inspired him to return to the franchise and conclude his trilogy sooner rather than later. In a recent discussion, he also hinted at the point in the story where Dune: Messiah will pick up upon completion.
While talking to Collider‘s Aidan Kelley at the Saturn Awards, Denis Villeneuve expanded upon why he picked Dune 3 as his next project. “I was expecting to do something else before, but frankly, that’s the inspiration that came to my mind as I took a break this summer and was going back and finishing the story. I was really moved by the way Part Two was received by cinephiles around the world,” he noted. “And I felt an appetiteand a desire to see more and a responsibility to finish that story,” he added.
Villeneuve also explained how Dune: Messiah will take shape following the ending of Dune: Part 2. “Chani’s heart is broken,” the director clarified, adding, “And it’s the beginning of the Holy War.” Villeneuve has already confirmed that Dune 3, which has yet to receive an official release date, will take place 12 years after the events of the second film.
