Production on Dune: Part Two has officially begun. The movie's official Twitter account shared the news.
Before this announcement, filming was expected to begin this fall in Budapest, with writer-director Denis Villeneuve coming back. The original--which won six Oscars--was released in 2021 during the pandemic both in theaters and on HBO Max, but the sequel is expected to play exclusively in theaters at the start. The movie also recently shifted its release date a few weeks, moving from October 20, 2023 to November 17, 2023.

In addition to returning cast members like Timothee Chalamet (Paul Atreides), Zendaya (Chani), and Stellan Skarsgaard (Baron Vladimir Harkonnen), the sequel will feature Florence Pugh (Princess Irulan) and Austin Butler (Feyd-Rautha), among other new cast members. Earlier this year, Villeneuve discussed the pressure to deliver with Dune 2.
«The first one, it was more to make sure that we will land in the world and that the movie will be accepted. Now it's to make sure that we can close that first book, so it's like there's some premises that are in the first movie that I need to ignore,» Villeneuve told Collider. «So yeah, I think I would say there's more pressure with the second one in some ways.»
Villeneuve added that Dune 2's script is «always a work in progress,» although as of March he had a completed one in hand. But he also emphasized that the script will be fluid depending on how filming progresses, and will remain that way until the director makes the final cut.
